The scientific method is the basis for answering all questions in science. Science is a process of discovering how the natural world works and what’s in it. It is a valuable tool used not only by students and scientists, but in many areas of business and industry.
Science is not finite and it is not settled. New discoveries are made every day because new questions are asked. Sometimes this means we learn more about discoveries we have already made and sometimes it means we find out that our original hypothesis was wrong.
This video explains the scientific method in 60 seconds.
Here are some ways to use this video in your class.
For Instruction: Have the students create a foldable highlighting the steps of the scientific method. Here is one example that you could edit and adjust depending on the level of your learners.
Pinterest and Google are great places to get started if you are unfamiliar with foldables.
For Extension: Ask students to explain why the last step in the scientific method video is to “Rinse and Repeat”. It is important for students to understand that in science there is always something new to discover and there are always new questions to be answered.
For enrichment: Have students research the scientific discoveries of Galileo and explain why some of his discoveries were not accepted at the time. Then, have students hypothesize on current scientific knowledge and theories that may be edited, changed, or thrown out as new discoveries are made. If students cannot think of any, offer changes in disease treatment as a springboard for thought.
